The 4 weeks of gym

For the last four weeks on a Wednesday Rooms 10 and 11 have been going to QE11 gym to do beam, floor, tramp and pit. In week 4 we went to gym and had so much fun. My favorite activity was jumping and flipping into the pit. In Week 4, the last week we had a pit race and my team won, "YAY" we all shouted!

Andy Griffiths

Andy Griffiths the amazing Aussie author left us just fascinated after his talk show at the town hall.

He started off by telling us about how to annoy your teacher, then what to do if you silicon yourself up in a shower.

He cracked us up with laughter when he read a story out of one of his books.
And finished off with telling us how to write our own stories.

The one hour went very quickly, but every second was hilarious.Great show thanks Andy.

Wearable Arts 2009

There was a roar of excitement at the Ngaio Marsh Theatre on Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th of August.
Fendalton Open-air School displayed a magnificent performance, all with humour, costumes, class dances and an additional New Zealand extra at the end.
The performance, called Absolutely Aotearoa was made by the children receiving little help from adults. The children performed 3 performances there were six categories. These were introduced by six dances from each class.
All costumes had to fit in one of the six categories.
The costumes were spectacular a giant buzzy bee appeared in Natural NZ and the sky tower appeared in ManMade NZ.
The dances introduced each category like Room 11's Canterbury dance where tourists ran onto the stage and a try where the performers fell of the stage.
Great fun Family night out.

Wearable Arts 2009

Wow what a way to start the term with cycle safe and our wearable arts performance!.

Time to go, lining up backstage, ready to perform, lights flash, music booms. We move quickly. It was bright, fast, transforming into tourist attractions, spinning into the gondola. We finish and pose, waiting for AMI stadium.

Time to get into my cool costume. The music jingles. I walk onstage posing for the wild clapping crowd, posing once more I rush off feeling really good.

Lining up for the finale we run on singing to the gumboot song with Mr N showing his real talent!.

The wearable arts was really wicked, I had lots of fun.

Andy Griffiths

On the 12Th of August we went down to the James Hay theatre in the town hall to see a live presentation of Andy Griffiths.
He is really funny and entertaining. He showed us how easy it is to make up a kids story. In all of his stories he makes something go wrong, then bad, then really bad to worse, to disaster.
It was a really fast and funny hour. I took alot of great ideas back to school.
Thanks for coming to NZ Andy.

On Wednesday Ben, Matt, and Goldie  competed in the  Centrals cross country at Halswell Quarry.

I was glad I wasn't in the seniors race because they had to do the longer loop.To make the Canterbury  team for Nelson you had to finish in the top 10. Ben came 26 Matt came 41 and Goldie came 49. Over all we were happy with our achievements.    By Ben

Black Sticks vs. India

On Thursday I was lucky enough to be able to go with my hockey team to Porrit Park.
New Zealand was on a winning streak yesterday at Porrit Park. Though it was really cold under the grandstand, it was a beautiful day outside.
New Zealand started to get tired in the 2nd half and score no goals.
India scored 2 goals 1 in the first half and 1 in the 2nd half.
New Zealand scored at 5.00 on the clock until half time.
That night some Fendalton people were on 3 news.

COCA Clay Workshop

Last Wednesday we went to COCA art gallery. We looked at a craft exhibition and we had to match close up photos to the real things. The categories were: ceramics, jewelery, fabric, furniture, woodwork and metal.

After that we went into the workroom. All of us were really exited! Nikki gave a talk about clay and how to make the clay into dishes. Soon after that we started planning what our dishes would look like. I decided to use an oval as a template. After we cut out our clay we chose patterns to press on the clay.
When we had done that we sponged the edges to make them smooth. Then we rolled little balls to put underneath.
I can't wait until they are fired.

Brainteaser 6- Wet weather

Four friends were walking back home together after leaving the pub. It started to rain so they began to run. Three of them got soaking wet hair, but one of them didn't, even though he was not wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella; neither did he stop to take shelter.

Goldie's Soap Carving

On Friday the one and only Mr Kaukau came in and taught us
how to soap carve.
First we had a big talk about the Maoris, our ancestors and Nemo the fish!!
Next it was morning tea. After that we started to carve. Mine was looking really bad at the start. And by the way Matt's fell on the ground and broke in half.
Next it was morning tea. After that we started to carve. Mine was looking really bad at the start. And by the way Matt's fell on the ground and broke in half.
When we carved Mr Kaukau sang and we laughed as well. Next we had to carve  around the rain drop. That was hard!!
Then we had to flatten the sides. That bit was fun. But as you could guess I was doing it wrong so I had to get some help. Next we had to us a C chisel to put the paua in. When I had chosen the to best pieces I put them in.  Then I carved my korus into my soap and that showed my brother and me.  That was another day with Mr Kaukau.

Soap carving

On the first of May 2009, Mr Kaukau a very funny guy who we all look forward to when he comes, came to visit us.
First we drew a line around the soap using a special tool. After that we used a chisel to shave the backround off the carving. Then it got technical. We had to carve notches coming from the paua see the pic.

Soon it was getting close to the end of the day, we were getting restless 2:54, 2:57, 3:00 '' ring ring'' I finished just in time.
All the boys did the Haka for Mr Kaukau and he talked about passion.
I thought mine was much better than my year 5 attempt.

Potato Wedges!

Last year 2008 our teacher planted potatoes with her class.
So this year Corrie and Natalie dug up the potatoes and put them in bags.
So guess what happened on Wednesday 8 April we made potato wedges. This is how we made them.
Firstly we scrubbed and washed the potatoes and made them spotless.
After they were cleaned we started to chop them in shapes of wedges and we mixed them with vinegar, brown sugar and tomato paste.
Then our teacher Mrs Rae put them in the oven and it took ages to cook and we got bored.
But then people were shouting the potato wedges are ready and we all ran to the classroom and there were heaps of potato wedges so we went and grabbed a napkin and we were only allowed four potato wedges. But then there were heaps left so we were allowed as much as we wanted but even room 11 by themselves couldn't finish them so we invited some other people to help us finish them.
Yummy they were delicious. We were very grateful to the 2008 year 6 children that planted them.

The Meridian Bike Jam

I woke on a relaxing sunny Sunday morning up and ready for a huge rampaging MERIDIAN KIDS BIKE JAM!
"Come on kids lets go" said Dad,Oh my god he was all ready.
Passed the airport, passed the mini train track, passed the vintage machinery museum,we were here at Mcleans Island and we were second there.
As the crowd started building up I started seeing different bikers from simple kids with helmets and sneakers to bike maniacs with full head helmets and padding all over their body.
Then Sam came "ya ready Johny!?"he said.
"Nine year olds and over please report to the start line"boomed the loud speaker, that was us.
Sam was right next to me and we were ready to go "GO!" we were off with a hiss and a roar.As we started making our way up the track I started pulling ahead of Sam, but he was caught in the slow pack, then I stopped I waited for Sam there he was, we were going to finish the race together.
Man when we finished our race we were really proud
Can't wait till next year.

city to surf

I was at the starting line waiting excitedly. The hooter went. We started off walking and went into a run, all in a bunch. I went on the grass to get away from the bunch and went at my speed.  1 k down 11 ks more to run. I had my water bladder with powerade in it to make me run faster.
The 3k sign was 100 metres away and people were handing out some water. I got two, one to drink and one to pour all over me. Nine ks to go. I am sweating. I am so tired I get a piece of my energy food and a bit of my drink.
7 ks to go. I am running beside a river. I say to myself I wish I could run into the cold water but it is not part of the course. While I am day dreaming abut the water I go flying into the 6 k sign. I see a woman handing out some energy drinks. I got one. I get a piece of food. A woman sees me get one and wanted one. I could just tell, so I offered her one and she ate it.
4 ks to go. A man is wetting the runners I go under the water and feel so much better. We run under a bridge.
3 ks! I see some people handing out some water. I get one. 2 ks two go. I am so close. I see a man doing it in his pjs and a clown hat. I giggled.
1k to go. I can see some people at the side watching. I go hard, as fast as I can go. My legs hurt but I think of the finish line. I can see it- the finish. 100 metres to go 50 metres to go 10 metres to go. I have done it finished the city to surf with a time of 57 minutes from the Christchurch square to QE11 stadium. I get a pump bottle and a certificate. I get in the car and go home to sit on the couch.

Cautiously crawling through thick green grass,
like a sleek brown fox,

sprinting,dodging the adults,
TRIUMPH!!! dropped one in.
Tumbling down the hill scratched and bruised,
give up NO! whizz to the top again.
Scrambling,scuttling up the hill

slipping slyly through the dark
camouflaged in the prickly brown bush
so steep

tatoo parlour answer

hhe guy with the tatoo on his shoulder(the bird who Iva didn't like)  did the other guy's tatoo which was the one on the back(whose Iva did like)so they did each others tatoo thats why he went back to no.1

Brainteaser 2 - Tatoo Parlour

Ivor wants a tattoo on his arm. There are only two tattooists in the small village where he lives, and Ivor visits both before deciding where to have his done.

The first one shows him a recent tattoo of a bird on his shoulder - Ivor is not very impressed, either by the tattoo or by the state of the room, so he goes to the second tattooists in the village. This one has a recent tattoo on his back which he is proud to show to Ivor.

Ivor is very impressed by what he sees and decides he would like one just the same. Why then does Ivor decide to return to the first tattooist in order to have the work done?

CoCa Visit

On Thursday room 11 went to the CoCA art gallery ( centre of contemporary arts ) and while we were there we found out a lot of interesting facts about German children's picture books ( an exhibit at CoCA). For e.g the story behind the art, the materials they used and the techniques. We also had a storyteller in to read us a picture book translated into English. We thought of what the pictures meant and how they can tell a simple story with no words.
After that we drew pictures of our own bedrooms at home and what they would look like with only a little bit of light coming through your door or window(s). We would definitely like to go there for one of their next exhibits.
